Winter in Montana is typically fairly cold, it’s true, but it’s usually sunny and dry, making for perfect weather to spend outdoors. There are dozens of fun activities in and around the Big Sky area in the winter—some you can do on your own, while others are best enjoyed with a guide.
Ski or Snowboard America’s biggest skiing: There is nothing like the morning after a fresh snowfall in Big Sky. The Lone Peak Pass interconnect lift ticket allows skiers and snowboarders access to 5,512 acres of skiable terrain, from the most relaxed, meandering slopes to the most challenging, vertical chutes. Between Big Sky Resort and Moonlight Basin, you have 23 lifts and 4,350 vertical feet at your fingertips…all yours for sheer skiing and snowboarding bliss.
Cross-country skiing: Lone Mountain Ranch, a working ranch turned paradise, is now named as North America’s #1 Nordic Ski center, with over 80 kilometers of groomed trails to discover. If the downhill slopes are not your thing, then these trails will offer you the experience you’re looking for. The Ranch offers a collection of snowshoe trails as well, for those looking for a slower pace in the woods.
Snowmobile and Snowcoach: Big Sky is surrounded by National Forest land and dozens of snowmobile trail opportunities right in our own backyard. In addition, West Yellowstone, just 36 miles from the Ranch, is the notable snowmobile capital of the world--and for good reason. Between West Yellowstone and neighboring Island Park, ID, miles and miles of trails give riders the opportunity for free reign on their sleds around the border of Yellowstone National Park. If a guided snowmobile or snowcoach trip into Yellowstone is more your style, then we are happy to arrange one for you with one of the many outfitters who can take you on a trip through the Nation’s oldest National Park.
Dog Sledding: If you find yourself seeking experiences with local character, try taking the helm of a ten-dog sled on a trail that winds into the north side of Lone Peak into the Moonlight Basin area. The remote Spanish Peaks provide the backdrop for your Klondike-inspired bliss. Spotting moose, bald eagles and a wolf or two will certainly add to the experience not soon to be forgotten.
Let us know if we can help you set up any of these adventures, or if you'd like more ideas on things to see and do in the area.
The Biggest Skiing in America can be found just up the road from the 320 at Big Sky Ski Resort and Moonlight Basin. We can arrange ski and stay packages so you can experience the cold-smoke powder upon which Lone Mountain has staked its reputation. Take the gondola up to the peak for some serious terrain, or ride the groomers that snake all across this scenic mountain. Ski rentals are widely available, and every skill level will enjoy their time on the slopes.
